Most of the time you spend with an AI tool is spent re-explaining: how you like a document built, the checklist you always run, the tone you always want. A skill is that standard written down once, so you stop paying to explain it. After that, Claude reaches for it on its own, only when the task calls for it.
A skill is a small Markdown file that teaches Claude one specific thing: a repeatable standard it follows without you repeating the instructions. Claude sees the name and description of every skill you have, and loads the full skill only when your task actually calls for it.
You can trigger one yourself by typing "/" or clicking "+" in a task, but the point is that you usually do not have to. Skills come bundled inside plugins, or you build your own, and the good ones are small and specific rather than large and vague.
